ABOUT THIS PROJECT

The brief involved the conversion of a 19th century bakery in Manchester into a modern studio environment for Andrew Wallace Architects in order to satisfy their current and expanding needs.

The studio’s street presence is discretely announced by steel-framed translucent glass screens. A steel entrance gate allows glimpses of the American white oak-clad facade and doorway behind. A granite plinth floats subtly above the pebbled courtyard and marks the entrance threshold, while above, a minimal glass canopy provides shelter.

Internally the bakery’s existing fabric was interpreted as a hollow shell into which was to be introduced a highly modern, functional scheme, drawing upon the building’s history and maintaining the existing footprint.

The design has a spartan and strict palette of materials consisting of oak, stainless steel, glass, stone and brilliant white walls and furniture. The materials and finishes were selected to unify the space and enhance the quality of natural light and its reflection.
