AWA were engaged by the parent company of the Moben (kitchens), Sharps (bedrooms) and Dolphin (bathrooms) brands to design and implement a new retail concept that would bring together and display all three of their brands under one roof, so that the customer could shop for the three key rooms of their house in one place.

The retail concept aimed to showcase the Moben, Sharps and Dolphin brands as high quality aspirational lifestyle products within a subtle environment that balanced modernist classicism with contemporary styling. The layout of the retail space was arranged in four distinct ways:

• Installation environments: segregated compartments allowing for complete kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms to be installed on three walls with individual flooring and lighting schemes. A compressive and functioning in-situ display of the product range.
• Islands: free standing white ‘goal-post’ arrangements accommodating four kitchen or bedroom displays, framing the units as a simple gallery backdrop, and allowing total flexibility in layout.
• Gallery walkway: a linear zone channelling people from the street with openings allowing visitors to diffuse into the segregated installation zones.
• Reception / welcome area: an informal zone accommodating a sales assistant and a display of product literature.

The concept design was realised in built form as the first concept store in Stevenage, including Andrew Wallace Architects overseeing fit-out on site. So successful was the launch that we developed and adapted the concept into eight further stores across the country, with each store chosen to represent all the different unit types likely to be encountered in the future, including concessions in larger stores. With the further success of these stores, the parent company proceeded with the full role out of stores nationwide, over 50 branches in total, using our concept and its practical application to quickly fit-out each to the same standards to maintain the overall brand quality.
