Interior Designers Manchester
At Andrew Wallace Architects + Interior Designers we are experts in interior design. If architecture is the physical manifestation of space, interior design brings that space to life. In a residential project, that space is where you will spend a great deal of time. It pays to engage someone who understands how to invigorate tired interiors.
About Our Interior Design Services in Manchester
Interior design is not only about decoration. It can also be about opening spaces up, integrating disparate elements of the house and connecting rooms to the outside. As leading Manchester interior designers, we take a holistic approach to developing your interiors. We combine novel structural solutions, architectural flourishes and a broad design language. This ensures your project is more than a sum of its parts.
We cover all aspects of your project, including:
- The coordination and optimisation of materials.
- Colour schemes.
- Patterns.
- Textures.
- Lighting.
- Selection and specification of finishes.
- Fittings.

Residential Interiors
We design complete interiors for houses and apartments: kitchens and living spaces, bathrooms, bespoke joinery and storage, lighting, materials, colour and furniture. Because we are architects as well as interior designers, we can also rework the layout itself, moving walls, opening up rooms and connecting the house to the garden. See House 075 and House 141.
Commercial Interiors
We design interiors for offices and workplaces, restaurants, bars and cafés, and shops, from the layout and kitchen or counter planning to finishes, lighting and signage. Our commercial interiors include Superdry in the Manchester Arndale, Olive Deli, Prego Café, Café Gourmand and our own award-winning studio at The Old Bakery. See our commercial architects page for office fit-outs and restaurant, bar and hotel design.
Interior Architecture
The best interiors start with the building itself. As interior architects, we think about how spaces connect, where the light comes from and how the structure can be used, as well as the finishes. Designing the architecture and the interior together avoids gaps between consultants and gives a more coherent result.
Interior Design Projects in Manchester and Cheshire
Some of the homes and businesses we have designed interiors for:
- House 141 interiors, Manchester: the interiors of a house renovation that brought several older buildings together into one light-filled home.
- House 075, Manchester: a dark, divided terraced house turned into a light, open-plan home through careful planning, colour, light and materials.
- House 015, Manchester: an apartment designed for everyday living inside the shell of an industrial building.
- Superdry, Manchester Arndale: a new store interior that builds on the brand identity with a more contemporary feel.
- Olive Deli, Manchester city centre: a delicatessen in a 19th-century Palazzo-style warehouse, designed for a new community of city-centre residents.
- Café Gourmand, Hale, Cheshire: an empty shop unit turned into a contemporary café specialising in luxury cakes and pastries.
- Prego Café: a deli converted into a café bar that works as a café by day and a bar at night.
- The Old Bakery, West Didsbury: our own studio, created inside a 19th-century bakery.
Interior Design FAQs
Here are the questions we are asked most often. If yours is not here, call us on 0161 448 0483.
Do you design interiors for homes and businesses?
Yes. We design interiors for houses and flats, and for offices, shops, cafés, restaurants and hotels. For larger commercial projects, see our commercial architects page.
Can you design the interior as part of an extension or new house?
Yes, and it is the best time to do it. Because the same team designs the building and the interior, the kitchen, joinery, lighting and finishes are planned into the drawings from the start, rather than added at the end. See our house extensions and new builds pages.
Do you only work in Manchester?
Our studio is in West Didsbury, and most of our interior design work is in Manchester and Cheshire, but we also take on projects further afield.
What does an interior designer do on a project?
We look after the layout, materials, colour, lighting, fittings, finishes and furniture, prepare drawings and specifications, and can coordinate the trades who carry out the work.
Can you design just one room, such as a kitchen?
Yes. We work on single rooms as well as whole houses, and can look at the wider layout if it would help.
Can you work with my builder?
Yes. We prepare drawings and specifications your builder can work from, and can coordinate the trades if you would like us to.
Do you help choose furniture, lighting and finishes?
Yes. We select and specify materials, fittings, lighting and furniture as part of the design.
Do you design interiors in Cheshire?
Yes. We work across Manchester and Cheshire, including Hale, Altrincham, Wilmslow and Alderley Edge, and further afield.
